Tomas Persson and the design team started this project with the idea to make the Blacktip even more optimized for the competition environment, bypassing market trends in favor of cutting-edge pro performance. The objective was to see how far to push the design, using new and lighter materials and as few components as possible. The creative fire that these sails lit within our team made us want to share these semi-custom designs with our customers in a one-off limited production.

THE CONCEPT

Using reverse engineering concepts the design team broke down the Blacktip into the smallest components. We minimized the number of panels and seams and reassembled the construction using as few parts as possible. Sourcing new lighter scrims combined with reducing the layers of reinforcements, only using the completely essential materials for the function and performance. The result is a sail that is lighter and feels more reactive in your hands. Alessio Stillrich was using the prototypes all summer in Pozo, testing and torturing them to the very limit, and the feedback was outstanding.

PERFORMANCE

The performance of the Blacktip TE suits the rider who wants to maximize every opportunity as one needs to do during heats. With a slightly increased aspect ratio and forward-focused draft, the TE reacts to the slightest input you give it whether in rotations or creating speed in the bottom turns. This is a pure competition wave sail. Therefore it requires a more committed sailing style compared to a Blacktip, but it will allow you to push your maneuvers bigger than before and provide that extra boost to go further, faster, and higher.

Take your sailing to the limit and beyond with a Blacktip TE.

Competition Wave Performance

Key rider benefits with the Blacktip TE

//  Forward-focused draft the TE reacts to the slightest input.

// 30% lighter laminated scrim materials in the foot and clew panels and reduced reinforcements make the TE approximately 300 grams lighter compared to the Blacktip.

// Reduced the layers of reinforcement that are not completely essential to function and performance.

// Wider distance between the lower two battens for a surf-style sensation.

// Four Batten Layout in all sizes. Fingertip control, light-weight, and drive to maneuver in the critical sections of the wave.

// The Q-Ply Luff Panel provides a crisp and reactive feel to the sail. Load up and release at any instance.

// Vertical Kevlar Load Line
Kevlar load line from top to tack to control the central effort; increase the longevity of the material which ensures that the sail profile stays in position when strong gusts hit the sail.

// Q-Ply Luff Panel
The 2 MIL Q-Ply luff panel creates a softer and more forward-focused power delivery. This combined with the strength provided by the vertical load line for maintained profile stability and durability.

// Kevlar Stretch Control Tendons
The Kevlar Stretch Control Tendons distribute the load throughout the surface of the sail from clew to luff. They control the breaking point for the twist, increase the wind range, and increase the longevity of the sail. An original Simmer Style feature that has been widely adopted by many other sail brands.

// Precision Tapered Battens
Precision tapered battens on the lower two battens. The taper is custom designed on each sail size to push the sail profile forward and keep draft locked in for stability.

// Finger Patch Tendons
The Finger Patch Tendons in clew create greater load distribution over a larger area of the sailcloth surface, which increases the durability, as well as the direct handling of the sail.

// Stainless Steel O-Ring
The Stainless Steel O-Ring provides the strongest possible connection between the boom outhaul and the sail, providing direct power delivery and sail. Simmer quality defined.

// Leech Stabilizing Cutout
The Blacktip Team Edition features a notch more negative shape on the batten above the boom compared to the Blacktip, the function of this is to push the profile forward and create that extra drive when needed. To balance this out we have added an extra deep cutout above the boom to stabilize the leech when the sail loads up.

Last summer our Sail Designer, Tomas Persson wanted to test to reduce the weight on my BT prototypes. So we reduced the reinforcements to the bare minimum and tested some new lighter materials in the lower sail body. At the same time, we tweaked the design to make the sail a bit more reactive in maneuvers. The proto's turned out super sick! I was using them all summer in Pozo. Compared to the Blacktip you need to be a bit more active in your sailing, which suits a sail for competition when you need to make the most out of every minute in a heat.

Blacktip TE feels super responsive and very light in the hands, the lightest sail I’ve ever used. While it’s quite powerful, the handling is my favorite aspect about it. One can get super close to the wave and go late and critical. The snappy feel gives the confidence to try to boost further than ever before.
