Lightweight powerhouse – the Simmer Style EvoQ in the test

Lots of power, easy handling – the Simmer Style EvoQ is part of the surf test for the first time – and impresses in many areas. But does it also have weaknesses? The test reveals it.

Complementary to the Blacktip model (HERE is a test of the 2024 model) manufacturer Simmer Style has another iron in the fire with the EvoQ. Up to size 4.7, the EvoQ is designed as a four-batten sail, from size 5.0 upwards as a five-batten concept. With a measured weight of 2.75 kilograms, the model is one of the lightweights in the group – at least on the scales. The features are very impressive, the entire sail is made of lightweight mesh material and the batten tips are protected at the front with Kevlar patches. The protector is also successful because it is long enough and easy to fold. Overall, the EvoQ is one of the concepts with a deeper profile, which it draws out of the mast sleeve. Trim adjustments are also made more via the boom than elsewhere, especially in strong winds you can pull the outhaul a little more.

The Simmer EvoQ loads up noticeably even when wobbling around with little sail draft and stabilises comfortably in the hands. The right angle for the wind is easy to find, all in all the sail gets up to speed excellently and offers plenty of planing power to get safely through the shorebreak or to go straight on the hunt for suitable jump ramps. Compared to its sister model, the Blacktip, it delivers more power on the waves and when accelerating.

” The Simmer Style EvoQ has convinced us! It offers a lot of planing performance on flat water and in the waves and combines this with very good control and great handling. This makes it suitable for a large target group, from occasional wave surfers to professionals. And it is by no means the wrong choice as a strong wind sail for flat water. “
