Cabo Verde has had an active season in 2025. Kicking off in mid November my first mission was filled with light winds and the promise of an active Atlantic season. A second mission in January continued those hopes as we began to see the main spots start to light up as we entered the Windy season. Most recently, the most active cycle yet started a long rally, which we will be talking about for a long time to come. Four separate swells in 12 days with wind during every episode ranging from float and ride 5.3 to fully powered 4.2 and everything in between.
A new board in my quiver is a Flywave spinoff, a Tri-Fin specific design code named Zenith. Starting off at 90LT it was on the water anytime the waves got serious. Drawing a dependable arc, and with full speed and control, the pulled in tail allowed critical positioning and maximum leverage in the steep, ledgy, hollow, fast waves the Island has to offer. Thrusters drive differently than Quads, its an exciting development that will continue to evolve. Ola has done a great job yet again , taking my initial ideas and turning those into an outstanding design that has upgraded my game out in these type of conditions.
Evoq has become my main sail of choice for several important reasons. The durability is one thing that I can depend on. That sail has shown so much resilience in truly challenging situations, there are rocky reef points everywhere on the island, and mistakes can cost you dearly. Evoq has handled the punishment, and excelled in several challenging scenarios while loaded with apparent wind. Going to a five batten profile in 5m sizes makes a big difference in the ability to stay on your angle of attack and thrive in the offshore wind conditions. Evoq also has a very effective low gear, and the power to get up and going fast. It delivered immediate response and decisive handling in critical situations, time and time again.
We were on a roll with the conditions. Ali Baba was at times going all the way from behind the Tree section to the launching site, the fabled 1Km ride. Several standout moments at Ponta Preta, and some of the other feature spots firing at All Time levels when the Swell directions aligned. Sometimes we sailed all the spots in the same day !! It was important to stay hydrated, energized and inspired while the conditions were firing. These situations are rare and it is especially satisfying to feel like I made the most of it.All the dream sessions and moments won’t be forgotten anytime soon, and was made more enjoyable by the best gear in the business.
