PHIL HORROCKS ON THE GEAR THAT POWERED HIS CORNWALL WAVE CLASSIC WIN

Two weeks ago, Phil Horrocks claimed victory at the Cornwall Wave Classic in some of the toughest conditions the UK has seen this season—mast-high sets and 40-knot winds. Armed with his 2025 Simmer Blacktip 4.0, 2025 Simmer Flywave 84 G7, the all-new Simmer Raptor harness, and the O’Shea Stealth 6/5/4 wetsuit, Phil took the win ahead of Ben Paige and Andy King.

O’Shea team riders Sarah Hilder and Cori McFarlane also impressed, finishing 1st and 3rd in the ladies’ category, while Simmer rider Ian Gibson took victory in the Masters fleet.

We spoke to Phil to get the inside scoop on how he set up his gear for the challenging conditions on competition day.

2025 Simmer Style Blacktip

2025 Simmer Blacktip 4.0

“The Blacktip just works in conditions like this. It’s soft and powerful, which is exactly what you want in gusty down-the-line conditions. I ran it slightly fuller—more downhaul than recommended—but kept the outhaul neutral to give it plenty of shape. This works really well in the gusty, cross-off conditions. It gave me the drive to power through the lulls and the softness to smooth out the gusts. This year’s version has more power, and that helped a lot with drive through the turns. What I like is that it has more power, but it stays low in the sail, which keeps it stable without lifting you in the gusts.”

G7  Flywave 84

“I love this board! Solid, fast, and in total control. If the waves are slower, I use the Quantex, but when I need high speed on the wave face, the Flywave is my go-to.

I moved the mast track 1cm back from the middle for extra balance with the 4.0 m sail. The rail grip is incredible—it lets me hit sections exactly where I want without losing speed. Compared to the previous G6 version, the nose grips better through the top turn, letting you throw the tail out and trust the grip. The new pads and straps are also noticeably more comfortable in choppy cross-off conditions.

For fins, I used a Quad setup with K4 14.5 cm rears and 8 cm fronts—kept it loose but still had the hold I needed in the turns.”

2025 Simmer Raptor Harness

” The 2025 model is a subtle rework of the previous Raptor with a cleaner line. I went down a size and used the medium. It’s lightweight and comfy. The best thing about a harness is when you forget it’s even there—it’s solid when you need it, but barely noticeable when you’re riding.”

O’Shea Stealth 6/5/4 Wetsuit

“The Stealth kept me warm and flexible all day. The fit is spot on, and it’s surprisingly lightweight for a suit this warm. Perfect for a full day of hard sailing in the freezing UK conditions.”
