Vauville & Siouville Contest Recap: A Weekend of Epic Windsurfing on the Cotentin Coast

On the weekend of the 22 to 23rd of Novemeber , the highly anticipated contest unfolded on the stunning northwest coast of France, in Vauville on Saturday and Siouville on Sunday. The Cotentin region delivered a mix of challenging and rewarding conditions, living up to its reputation as a prime windsurfing destination.

A week prior, the forecast was promising:

  • Two days of strong south wind, side-shore to side-offshore.
  • Temperatures unusually mild for the area, reaching up to 17°C on Sunday.
  • Wave conditions varied, with a 2m wind swell on Saturday and a long 2.2m, 13s swell on Sunday.

Day 1: Battling Elements in Vauville

Saturday saw 12-minute heats requiring two jumps and two wave rides. It was a tough day, with strong winds, persistent rain, and powerful currents making jumping especially tricky. Simmer rider, Yann Sorlut was riding the G6 Flywave (72L and 78L) and the Blacktip (3.1 to 4.0), and managed to push through the challenging conditions and finished the single elimination in 4th place.

Day 2: Sunshine and Massive Waves in Siouville

On Sunday, the orgaisation relocated to Siouville for side-offshore conditions and larger, cleaner waves. The morning started with bursts of sunshine, but the gusty wind—ranging from near 50 knots outside to moments of stillness between sets—kept everyone on edge. The head judge adapted the format, removing jumps and focusing on wave riding in 17-minute heats with three scoring waves.

Yann Sorlut managed to halt Bastien Ramery’s strong run in the double elimination, followed by wins against Nicolas Akgazciyan and Kylian Du Couedic. These victories brought Yann to the final, a grueling 25-minute battle against Baptiste Cloarec. Baptiste delivered an impressive performance, throwing flawless goiters and even a one-handed goiter into the wave. Despite Sorluts best efforts, he finished second, proud of the result and admittedly exhausted after 1.5 hours of intense heats.

Final Thoughts by Sorlut

” The weekend in Cotentin showcased the best of what this region has to offer: challenging yet rewarding conditions, fierce competition, and a vibrant windsurfing community. Finishing second in such a high-caliber field is a moment I’ll cherish, and it’s fuel for the next challenge! “
